A robotic revolution?

A Robotic Revoluition?

We have all seen those science fiction movies set in the future where robots are smarter than humans and don’t need humanity to survive. But are we getting any closer to that vision?

Black Friday - Are you dead turkey yet again?

It has become an annual ritual. Prices keep getting lower and Black Friday keeps getting pushed up. Walmart has announced that it will open store on Thanksgiving Day at 10 PM.  The big-box and online retailers have dropped prices rock bottom that it has become hard for the ESCs to compete with them based on prices alone (This is not our goal in the first place).

Coming Soon to a Home Near You

I have talked about Apple TV and OTT in the past, but recently I have been surprised to see pre-theatrical releases available to rent on Apple TV. Some movies that are available are Melancholia and I Melt With You.

When the original scheme for IP addresses on the internet (IPV4) was put in place, everyone was pretty sure it would be a long time before we would need more than 4.3 billion of them. In fact, several years later in 1990 out of the hundreds of millions of homes in the developed world, very few had internet connections. But now, over half of those ho

Five Rules for Readability

Coleen Sterns, Marketing Matters - CEDIA Professional Service Member

Five Rules for Readability

Tom Sant, author of Persuasive Business Proposals, shared five rules for making anything you write more readable. Microsoft Word can automatically tell you if you’ve met four of the rules: short sentences (average 17 words or less); short words (average five characters or less); 10th grade reading level or lower; and less than 10% passive voice. I’ve been writing for years and never knew about the “Readability Statistics” tool in Word. The fifth rule is no fluff, guff, geek or weasel words in your writing.

Press F1 while in Word to pull up the Help/Search menu. Search for Readability Statistics. Follow the instructions to turn on the feature. If using Word 2007, the “Word Options” choice is at the bottom of the right hand column of the main Word pull down menu. Once the feature is activated, you have to manually check the Spelling and Grammar of your document once. At the end of the process the summary pops up. Cool feature – I’m at a 7.0 grade reading level, 4.5 characters per word, 16.3 words per sentence and 8% for passive voice for this insight. I was higher on all these statistics and made adjustments.

Control the Middle for GreenTech Success

REFERENCE: Green Tech Advocates

Let’s face it: Few people really want to be green. More might want to save energy, but only if it saves them money and only if it’s not too difficult.

So how do we get them to buy green home technologies like energy management systems?

We do what Raff Cody does.

Wait. You don’t know who Raff is? Raff is the main character in a novel called Anthill, but the naturalist E.O. Wilson.

Raff is a naturalist who has fallen in love with a tract of natural habitat where he studies ant colony behavior, hence the book title. But the tract is going to be sold and developed, so Raff takes his rich uncle’s offer to study law, and upon graduation goes to work as the legal counsel for the developer. As such, Raff finds a way for the developer to put homes on the land, while preserving much of the tract in its natural state.

“Raff lived by three maxims,” Wilson writes. “Fortune favors the prepared mind. People follow someone who knows where he’s going. And control the middle, because that’s where the extremes eventually have to meet.”

Control the middle is also what sellers and marketers of green technology and energy management systems must do. We can’t sell energy management systems as naturalists or environmentalists insistent upon saving the earth. It’s just not going to happen—unless there’s irrefutable proof linking our energy consumption to global warming. (And as long as there are partisan politics and cable TV, the irrefutable proof part is refutable as well.)

So like Raff, we must come to the mature and objective conclusion that we should meet the “opposition” in the middle. And once we decide to do that, we need to control the middle.

That means this:

Forget the environment. Energy management systems can help you save money on your electricity and on your heating bills. And electricity is bound to get more expensive as demand grows and supply dwindles. This is a primary reason why we need energy efficiency.

No, being energy-efficient isn’t a chore. You can have an energy management system that automatically sets the temperature in various parts of your house, according to your preferences, so you won’t forget and leave the air conditioner on unnecessarily. And, you can have it start up and cool your home before you get home!

You can also have a system that automatically shuts off lights and cuts power to some electronics so they don’t continue to suck vampire power when no longer in use. How cool is that?

You can have a system that helps you conserve water and lower your water bills by collecting rainwater to use in your landscaping and gardens. (See 3 Water-Saving Homes.)

And again, the only finger you have to lift is to touch a button on your smart phone.

While you’re doing this, you’re actually helping your country to be more energy independent, because you’re cutting your oil or gas heating costs and using less electricity from power plants fueled by oil or other fossil fuels. So being energy-efficient is also patriotic. Or, as New York Timescolumnist Thomas Friedman says in his book, Hot, Flat and Crowded, “Green is the new red, white and blue.”

That, folks, is controlling the middle. Control the middle in this market, and you can sell green home technologies and energy management systems. The middle makes more sense to more people.

Only we need real people, not just a fictional character, to do it. If we don’t control the middle, a lucrative market for green home technologies and energy management systems will remain but a fiction as well.

Smart Grid and Energy Management

There has been a lot of talk lately concerning the smart grid projects around the country and how they will change our businesses and our customers lives.  For the last 18 months or so we have offered energy audits and recommendations on how best to implement changes in energy use for our customers.  The results have been mixed at best.  Part of the service has been to install energy monitors for the customer to see how much energy they are using, also with mixed results.   After a short time the energy dash boards become part of the back ground and are no longer new neat or cool.  They get ignored along with whatever behavior modifications they might have early on prompted.  There is also the reluctance of the consumer to give over control of some of their electrical systems to an entity they don't trust or like, remember how many of your customers feel about the power company, the phone company and the cable company?  For several years the utilities have been installing automated meter reading systems and in many areas the ability to shut off customers air conditioners and electric water heaters as part of their efforts to reduce peak loads.  They can save between 4-6 dollars per meter per month with these automated meter systems by eliminating the need for meter readers.  You might even hear the about something called SCADA, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.  The power company uses SCADA to monitor the health of their system and collect data on the power needs and performance of the system.  Where the utilities touch us is when they start talking about the HAN, home area network,

Companies are offering wireless HAN solutions that are controlled by their electric meters and allow the utility to control and monitor systems inside the home.  Thermostats and appliances look to be the first devices controlled with lighting and other ancillary systems to come.  I see these products as opportunities for us.  We need to make certain that we are engaged and delivering the energy management solutions our customers need, even if they don't know it yet.  We have an advantage, our customers tend to trust us, they are wary of the power company and their motives.

We need to be realistic here however.  The average power bill across the US is 100 to 125 dollars per month.  How much effort and how much money will a person spend to reduce their power bill by the expected 10% each month?  Will they spend 500 dollars or more to save 15 dollars a month?  Experience suggests no they will not.  In a recent article in Smart Grid News a spokesperson for Southern California Edison predicted that "While 36% of customers will interact with utility data in the next 10 years, 64% will likely remain unengaged".  Another expert quoted in the article described the change to smart grid as "rather slow and ugly".

The best way for a CEDIA company to profit from the smart grid is to find an application that allows the client to save money without spending much and without a lot of work and hassle. We should capitalize on our already existing relationships and help our customers see the value of energy management and conservation.

The emergence of Internet-enabled devices and how it is changing the landscape of home entertainment

    Blu-ray Shmoo-ray

In this space last August I wrote a blog titled "Blu-ray Blu(e)s" bemoaning the lack of recognition and demand for Blu-ray among the general public. This, despite the fact that the format unquestionably provides the best high-def picture any of us can enjoy at home, and that Blu-ray had recently passed its third anniversary in the marketplace.

Mixing it up with the big guys - Can you win?

After my post last week about the 3/50 Project, and the importance of small businesses to local communities, I got some interesting feedback. A fellow ESC who installs security and entertainment systems wrote the following; "Both ADT and Apex are continually running these $99 or free install promotions with a 3 year monitoring contract. What do you do to compete against that?

My Thoughts on CEDIA EXPO's Indy Return

I was pretty excited to find out on Tuesday (I was sworn to secrecy until the next day) that CEDIA was moving its annual EXPO convention back to Indianapolis in 2011. Hopefully by then the industry will be buzzing again and the energy that we all felt in earlier Indy years is there again.

Yikes!  Some of you already know about The Energy Detective (TED), and some of you might be aware of their kick-ass TED5000 product, a wonderfully rendered energy monitor for the home that interoperates with other control systems via XML data exchange.  But add Google PowerMeter to the mix and you have another game changer.

Futurity - An Awesome Resource for Research in the Universities and Labs

Some people ask me how I keep up with technology, which is a bit of a passion for me.  One trick is to find really smart people to share emails with, and another is to use technology news aggregators.  A new one has popped up from some friends at Stanford University and you may want to give it a poke.

MoCA Demo at Entropic Communications - It's the Retrofit, Stupid!

MoCA is the Multimedia over Coax Alliance, which is a home networking technology that puts very high quality Ethernet on existing coax.  This technology is immensely useful in installations that have no CAT5 and where WiFi is not enough. But the big news is about the future of TV! (Hint: It's over the top.)

Monitoring Your Systems with eServices' Black Box
